New Years Resolutions

This time of year, many of us reflect on the year that was and the year that will be.  We resolve to exercise more or to lose weight or to get better organized.  Sometimes we resolve to stop doing something that has been unproductive or maybe even destructive…stop smoking, stop eating so much, stop swearing…whatever it might be.  The problem with New Years Resolutions is they usually end up in failure and they make us feel worse.

I believe one reason we fail is because of how we frame our resolutions.  Because it is our personal resolution, we usually begin it with “I”.  “I will lose weight”, “I will exercise more”, “I will stop smoking”, etc.  We place the resolution on our own shoulders and thereby rely solely on ourselves to make it a success.

Let me suggest an alternative.  What if we stated our resolutions as desired outcomes instead of things we will do.  In my area of expertise (massage therapy) a client could resolve to improve their mobility or to live with less pain or to improve their flexibility.  These are outcomes that would be great to see realized but they can’t be achieved all by ourselves.  You can let others in your life carry the load with you toward a positive outcome.  My staff and I can help you.  We truly care about you.  We really do.  Yes, it still requires something of you but not just you.  Sometimes a whole team is necessary.  This idea of not shouldering everything can help you to also achieve other goals as well.

I hope you will call me and allow me to help you to be all that you can be.  At Wina’s we have a heartfelt desire to help you not just feel better but to get better.

Happy New Year to all my wonderful customers.  We can do this!

Time on the Table

I thought it would be helpful to discuss how different massage establishments operate when it comes to “time on the table”.  Many of our competitors advertise 60 and 90 minute massage sessions just as we do.  However, if you read the fine print you’ll see that they actually subtract out time for consultation and undressing/dressing.  So in reality the clock starts ticking from the moment you arrive.  That means, for example, that a 60 minute session ends up lasting only 45-50 minutes in terms of “time on the table” but they are still charging you for the full 60 minutes.

At Wina’s, we operate differently.  Your session doesn’t start until your therapist begins the massage and it doesn’t end until an hour later (in the case of a 60 minute session).  You will get a full hour of “time on the table”.  We don’t think you should have to pay us to get undressed/dressed nor to talk with us.  If you arrive late we will do our best to give you a full session but sometimes we may have to make adjustments but we will discuss this with you before the session starts.

Our customers are everything to us.  We value you and we prioritize your therapy above everything else.

Thank you for your friendship and support.  I hope to see you again soon.

Massage helps Anxiety and Depression

Research continues to expand our understanding of the many benefits of massage.  I found the following amazing information at prevention.com.

A review of more than a dozen massage studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine concludes that massage therapy relieves depression and anxiety by affecting the body’s biochemistry. In a series of studies including about 500 men, women, and children with depression or stress problems, researchers measured the stress hormone cortisol in participants before and immediately after massage and found that the therapy lowered levels by up to 53%. (Cortisol can drive up blood pressure and blood sugar levels and suppress the immune system.) Massage also increased serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.

Come in to Wina’s.  Our goal is to improve your well-being…body, mind and soul.

The Opioid Crisis

We have been hearing more and more about the nation’s Opioid crisis.  It is a complex topic that has ramifications in the areas of addiction, public health and law enforcement just to name a few.  I am not a medical doctor so I do not want to suppose that I can speak authoritatively on the efficacy or necessity of these pain relieving drugs.  However, as a licensed massage therapist who helps her clients everyday to manage their pain I would offer that therapeutic massage can be, in the right circumstances, a very effective way of mitigating and managing pain.  We’ve got to reign in this crisis somehow and I think prescribers should take pause before prescribing pain killers that are known to be addictive.  Other options like massage need to be given, at a minimum, serious consideration before going forward with a prescription.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

This week the Chamber of Commerce and Lyon Township officials came to my place for a wonderful ceremony.  They presented me with a welcome certificate and told me about the history of my building.  We had some yummy snacks and then we went outside to my sign for photos and the ribbon cutting.  I am very grateful for the support shown to me by the community.  I love being in New Hudson and Lyon Township.
